We believe strongly in natural tobacco, and we’re so proud of our development of organic tobacco growing that we wrote a book about it.

Organic Tobacco Growing in America and Other Earth Friendly Farming chronicles Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Company’s 20-year effort to establish and develop organic tobacco farming in the United States.

When the publisher asked us to write a description for the back cover, we simply said, “This is a story about the rebirth of a lifestyle – a way of life that once was and now is meant to be again – for a world that yearns for sustainable, earth-friendly farming.”

The original idea was to write a handbook or guide for tobacco growers interested in growing organically. It ended up being that and a lot more. Organic Tobacco Growing in America and Other Earth Friendly Farming is an American story of applying vision and values to innovation – the Santa Fe way. The story stretches from our humble beginnings in the high desert of Northern New Mexico to the fabled tobacco roads of the southeast.

While demand for organic tobacco leaf is doubling each year, it wasn’t always so. When SFNTC first turned to America’s tobacco farmers in 1989 and proposed an unheard of proposition: “How about growing organic tobacco,” there were more than a few skeptics. Now, many are looking at the growing practices and sustainable farming techniques developed by our company.

We invite you to meet the growers in this book who learned how organic farming is bringing back the principles of sustainability to the family farm.

Published by Sunstone Press, and available at bookstores and online sources such as Amazon and Google, the 204-page book includes almost 100 photos depicting organic farming and lists for $22.95.

The book was not produced, however, with the intention of being a commercial success. Rather, it was a labor of love by the people of SFNTC to share what we have learned about organic tobacco. Any profits derived from the sale of the book will be contributed to the Carolina Farm Stewardship Association in recognition of their work to promote organic, earth-friendly farming.

HELPING THE RIVER

SFNTC adopted in 2007 a stretch of the Santa Fe River, which was named the “Most Endangered River” in the country in 2007 by American Rivers. We made a three-year, $150,000 commitment to the rehabilitation efforts.
